American actor and voice actor James McCaffrey has passed away after a battle with cancer.
The 65-year-old Max Payne actor, who added over one hundred acting credits to his name, was best known for voicing Max Payne in the namesake video game series. He was also well-recognized for his work on Alan Wake games and for appearing as Captain Arthur O’Breun in New York Undercover and Jimmy Keefe on Rescue Me.
Throughout his long and successful career, James secured a number of main and recurring roles in a variety of films and television shows.
TMZ now reported the actor’s death while quoting a source who explained that the saddening news comes after McCaffrey’s battle with multiple myeloma, a type of bone marrow cancer.
“One of Dick Wolf’s proteges (Swift Justice), McCaffrey went on to a successful 35 year career in television and film,” an insider told the publication.
“Trained at the Actor’s Studio, he never lost his love for creating characters; however, his good looks often pushed him toward leading man roles.”
Following his passing, tributes to McCaffrey began pouring in.
“James McCaffrey we were lucky to have known you. My best friend you will be missed,” actor Kevin Dillon wrote.
“Rest in Peace James McCaffrey, the inimitable and commanding presence who brought Max Payne to life,” Rockstar Games, the developer of GTA V, tweeted.
The official Alan Wake II X account shared: “We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our beloved friend and collaborator James McCaffrey, the iconic voice of Max Payne and Alex Casey.
“His remarkable talent not only gave life to our characters but also left an enduring impact on our community. Our hearts go out to his family in this time of loss.”
