In Paris, a dramatic daylight theft saw a gang of thieves escape with some priceless jewels in a massive robbery that lasted just ten minutes.
Sources shared how the men gained entry through the museum’s Apollo Gallery through a balcony and used a cherry picker to scale the exterior. Surveillance footage showed how two men were seen wearing construction-type high-visibility vests, and the other had a motorcycle helmet on, calmly descending from the lift carrying the stolen loot before fleeing on scooters.
Investigators mentioned how they found DNA traces inside the helmet and gloves that were left behind at the scene, which could help identify the perpetrators. The number of suspects is said to be four, two who entered through the gallery and two more that were on escape scooters.
The museum’s director admitted serious security failings, adding how the certain exterior walls lacked camera coverage and that planned security upgrades had yet to be fully implemented.
The heist has been called out as one of the most audacious in recent times, targeting historic jewels of the French crown. This has triggered a full scale investigation of more than 100 officers as well as substantial political rollouts.
