NY and NJ skipped flag order for Charlie Kirk despite Trump directive

The states of New York and New Jersey didn’t issue orders to lower flags for slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, leaving Bergen County under fire for following the state protocol instead of the proclamation of Donald Trump.

Trump signed a directive on Wednesday, where he ordered the US flags around the nation to be lowered through Sunday, 6 pm, referring to Kirk as a truly Great American Patriot.

Flags at the White House came down that afternoon, as per sources. But in the state of New Jersey, the official state flag status listed full staff, and Bergen County ended up following suit. New York also kept their flag status high at all times, while Pennsylvania and Delaware complied with the directives from Donald Trump.

State officials shared how New York planned to direct flags to be lowered on the day of Kirk’s funeral, and that was consistent with past practices for other high-profile deaths like Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and Corey Comperatore, who was the firefighter from Pennsylvania who was slain in the previous year’s Trump rally.

Several other counties and municipalities in New Jersey end up doing the same. As shared by a rep from the Bergen County Executive’s Office, the county follows the state’s daily guidance, which that day called for full staff attendance.
