A fire recently broke out in a two-storey apartment in Kenosha in Wisconsin, that resulted in the death of three young children.
The victims were reportedly found dead at the scene, and their 7-year-old sister, Alena Kannin, was said to be alive and hospitalized, but she also soon passed away from the injuries.
The father, named Joshua Kannin, was said to be the sole survivor in this tragedy. As per a search warrant affidavit that was shared, the father detailed more about waking up to discover a small fire on the kitchen floor, panicked, and running outside to get help.
The children were left inside. He also claimed that he yelled for the kids to come downstairs, but heavy smoke stopped him from re-entering. Joshua explained to the cops how he lit a cigarette inside the kitchen earlier that same evening and thought he had extinguished it before he lay down to sleep, but that was sadly not the case.
Authorities are said to have recovered the dad’s phone from the apartment and searched it with zero evidence of any kind of criminal activity.
Still, this case remains under investigation due to the deaths of the children. Investigators are exploring to see if the blaze might have been arson or homicide. A funeral service has been organized for the siblings, and a GoFundMe campaign has been rolled out to cover these costs.
