Justin Bieber has opened up about his mental health and admitted he suffered an emotional breakdown shortly after getting married.

As the Love Yourself hitmaker revealed in an interview with Ebro Darden of Apple Music that was shared by People magazine, he expected that tying the knot with Hailey Baldwin would solve all of his personal issues.

The couple previously tied the knot twice – once in a New York City courthouse in 2018 and then again in a South Carolina ceremony attended by their families and friends in 2019.

After figuring out that marriage wasn’t going to solve his problems, however, Bieber had an emotional breakdown.

“It’s a journey. I remember when I first got married, I hit a little bit of an emotional breakdown because I thought marriage was going to fix all my problems and it didn’t. It just kind of was a reflection of like, man, you’re a bit of a hypocrite man,” he told Darden.

“You want your wife to do something that you’re not doing and it’s like, it’s hard sometimes to look in the mirror and really have to realize, man, maybe you’re not the person that you necessarily thought that you were. And that’s just a result of trauma and life circumstances.”

Justin and Hailey have faced their share of challenges in their four years of marriage, whereas Hailey previously admitted she was close to walking out following troubles in paradise.

Most recently, the couple also had to deal with Hailey’s health scare after the model suffered a mini-stroke.

“I remember I called her [her mother] a few different times, one particular time when we were in Brooklyn and I was calling her, I was crying, and I was like, ‘I just can’t do it. There’s no way that I’m going to be able to do this if it’s going to be like this forever,’” Hailey admitted on the podcast In Good Faith with Chelsea & Judah Smith last year.

“And I just remember she was so calm on the phone and she was like, ‘It’s going to pass, and you’re going to be fine and he’s going to be healthy and we’re here for you.’”

While Hailey sought refuge and comfort in her family, Bieber turned to God and a spiritual lifestyle to conquer the challenges ahead of him.

“I’ve been so just very public about my faith journey and how my relationship with Jesus has helped me to just not be so hard on myself. Just the idea that I’m forgiven and that he’s walking me through this journey and day by day, I get to just get better and better and not be too hard on myself,” the singer explained in his recent interview.

Crediting religion for seeing life from a different perspective, he added: “I think that that’s ultimately what’s going to encourage the people of the world of like, it’s discouraging out here sometimes, life smacks you in the face and it can be hard to get back up.

“But when you can have a perspective that God is not an angry dude, he is a loving, considerate, compassionate God who knows what we’re going through and just wants us to be the best versions of ourselves. And so that for me in that perspective has really changed everything, man.”
