An Emmy award-winning journalist broke down as she shared her tragic diagnosis on air.
Nichole Berlie, who has worked as a weekday NewsNation anchor, gave an emotional speech as she bravely opened up about her diagnosis live during the NewsNation Now segment.
Addressing the viewers while clearly trembling, the journalist said:
“I am sharing that I have been diagnosed with breast cancer. I am one of the nearly 300,000 women who have been diagnosed with this disease this year in the US, it did come as a shock, I’m still in disbelief in many ways, I didn’t have any signs, I didn’t have any symptoms, I still don’t.
“I still feel great. But as I now know, firsthand, you can have cancer and you can feel and look fine. But I’m so happy to be starting my treatment tomorrow.”
Shaken by the news, Berlie went on to say that she hopes to continue working as usual while warning the viewers that her appearance will change in the upcoming months.
“The odds are that I’ll lose my hair. And before that happens, I’m going to be cutting it off. And I’m going to donate it to an organization that helps kids who are fighting cancer as well,” the veteran journalist, who joined the TV network in 2020, continued.
“Now, this is my real hair, I don’t wear any pieces, I don’t wear extensions. And I’m only even saying that, because it means I am going to look very different. And it will be an adjustment for you as a viewer, but also for me.
“So I wanted to give you some warning, because it is going to be a big change. But it’s only hair and it will grow back. The important thing is that I beat this.”
The network has since confirmed that Berlie will be able to return to work just days after her treatment begins, whereas the anchor now plans on working to the best of her abilities.
“I also want to keep working throughout as much of this process as I can, mainly for my own sanity, because thankfully my bosses here at NewsNation have been extremely supportive,” she concluded.
“I’m hopeful that seeing my journey will help someone, whether they are also battling cancer or if they have a loved one who is, because cancer truly touches all of us in some way. I know so many people understand this journey.”
