Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s trial has taken a pause and here’s what happens next.
The former lover’s blockbuster legal case began after Johnny Depp sued his ex-wife Amber Heard for $50 million saying she tarnished his reputation in her op-ed for Washington Post and claiming his career was damaged as a result of her allegations.
The Hollywood A-lister argues that he had lost $22.5 million in an instant after being kicked from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise following the release of the op-ed.
Meanwhile, Heard is countersuing Depp for $100 million saying she was defamed when her ex-husband branded her as a liar and called her allegations a hoax.
While both parties have already taken the stand in the Fairfax, Virginia court, the trial has come to a halt this week.
Though the proceedings had been taking place Monday through Thursday since the trial’s beginning on April 12, this week is an exception due to Judge Penney S. Azcarate’s obligation to attend a conference that was scheduled in advance.
This means the trial will make no progress this week, whereas the proceedings will continue on May 16.
It has since also been confirmed that the trial is moving to its end and both parties are set to make closing arguments on May 27.
Following the resume of the trial, it will be Heard’s turn to take the stand. While she already delivered her testimony – which Johnny Depp’s legal team called the performance of her life – she has yet to be cross-examined by Depp’s lawyers.
“As Mr. Depp’s counsel correctly predicted in their opening statements last month, Ms. Heard did indeed deliver ‘the performance of her life’ in her direct examination,” Depp’s spokesperson said.
“The upcoming cross examination from Mr. Depp’s team will be most telling, and will certainly highlight the many fallacies Ms. Heard has now attempted to pass off as fact throughout her convoluted testimony.”
