Johnny Depp’s star attorney has spoken out and revealed what went on behind the scenes as she praised the actor for his bravery.
Camille Vasquez has been branded as a hero by Johnny Depp’s fans after grilling Amber Heard on the stand and helping the actor win his defamation trial against his ex-wife.
The aspiring attorney, who has since been promoted from an associate to a partner at her law firm, has now spoken out and praised the Pirates of the Caribbean star in an interview with People.
Striking back at accusations that Depp’s legal win against his ex-wife serves as a major blow to the ‘MeToo’ movement, Vasquez said:
“We all believe that women should, and victims — regardless of gender — should come forward and have their day in court. This case is an example of that.
“These people had their day in court and the jury decided unanimously that Mr. Depp was defamed. I think it doesn’t get more clear than that. Each case is different and it shouldn’t have an effect on any movement. Domestic violence doesn’t have a gender.”
The lawyer went on to applaud Johnny for speaking out and exposing his entire life in front of the world with the intention to get the truth out in the open.
“I commend him for his bravery and his courage, just like I do any other victim of domestic abus* who comes forward and stands up and is willing to have their day in court and have everything about their life exposed just to seek justice and the truth,” Vasquez added.
Speaking of her client, the attorney claimed he feels more at peace after being able to tell his story and clear his name.
“I think that once he was able to do that and expose everything, the good, the bad, the ugly, he felt a sense of relief, and he deserves that,” she told People.
In her interview, Vasquez also opened up about the grueling preparations her team endured for six weeks while living in a hotel near the Fairfax courthouse.
As she explained, the team would arrive back at the hotel after trial proceedings only to change, have food served, and stay awake up to 5 am to prepare for the next day.
Calling their preparations “very intense,” Vasquez praised the team of “amazing” young lawyers she was working with and suggested they were able to look at the evidence from a critical perspective.
“Before I did her cross and before I delivered the opening and closing arguments, I would go to bed around 1 or 2 in the morning. And then my team would stay up till 5, 5:30, and slide whatever it was that we were working on under my door,” Vasquez added as she paid a tribute to her team.
“I was the one that delivered the cross-examination, but I was very clear that this wasn’t my cross examination. This was our team’s.”
