Just moments after slapping presenter Chris Rock in the face over his joke about Jada Pinkett’s baldness, Will Smith took to the stage at Dolby Theatre to claim his Best Actor Oscar.

While claiming the prestigious award, Smith received a standing ovation despite the audience gasping in shock just minutes earlier when he boldly attacked the host.

Speaking of the moment the 53-year-old veteran actor was awarded a standing ovation, comedian Jim Carrey admitted it made him feel “sick.”

“I was sickened by the standing ovation. I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse. It really felt like this is a clear indication that we’re not the cool club anymore,” the 63-year-old told Gayle King of CBS Morning News.

The Ace Ventura star went on to suggest that Rock refused to file charges against his assailant because he “didn’t want the hassle” that would come along with the arrest of the A-list celebrity.

“I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million because that video’s gonna be there forever. It’s gonna be ubiquitous. That insult is gonna last a very long time,” Carrey added.

The Mask actor also suggested that there were much better ways for Smith to display his disapproval of Rock’s joke – such as by speaking out on social media or even yelling at the host from his seat – without resorting to violence.

“You do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody on the face because they said words,” he added.

“It didn’t escalate, it came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him that’s frustrated and I wish him the best, I really do. I don’t have anything against Will Smith, he’s done great things.

“It cast a pall over everybody’s shining moment, a lot of people worked really hard to get to that place. It is no mean feat to go through all the stuff you have to go through when you get nominated for an Oscar. It’s a gauntlet of devotion. It was just a selfish moment.”
