US President Donald Trump shared yesterday that he had commuted the prison sentence of disgraced former NY Republican Congressman George Santos.
He had been serving an 87-month-long jail sentence, but Trump thought it would be a good idea to let him go early, sparking outrage.
Santos was in prison serving a sentence for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.
Santaos was expelled from Congress for his actions in December of 2023 after a House Ethics Committee report shared a pattern of lies and fabrications about his resume, finances, background, and campaign donations. He pleaded guilty in August of 2024.
When he was sentenced, prosecutors were arguing at the time that he had made a complete mockery of the entire election system and therefore deserved a major term.
In his Truth Social post, Trump mentioned Santos as somewhat of a rogue and added that he was being dealt with too harshly and noted his strong loyalty to the Republican Party. The commutation means that his prison term has ended and also signals that it would wipe out all the fines put out against him. This decision has gotten widespread criticism from Democrats and some Republicans who claim that anyone can get away with anything now.
