An earthquake of high magnitude was seen striking the island of Crete in Greece on Wednesday.
The news was confirmed by the German Research Center for Geosciences. They shared how the exact magnitude was said to be 6.3.
The quake was at a depth of 83 kilometers or 51.57 as per the center. As of right now, the current damage to the island is not known. However, the USGS estimates shared how there is little risk of landslides or liqefaction, depending on the loss of ground’s structural integrity.
As per the USGS, tremors would likely be felt across several dozen islands in Greece as well as the western coast of Turkey.
Tremors are likely to have been felt inland around the Mugla and Aydin provinces of Turkey.
Shaking was similarly reported in Egypt, Israel, and Syria. The region lies in one of the most seismically active zones in Europe, where the African and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.
