Tsunami waves were seen reaching California and Hawaii in the US after a massive earthquake had struck off Russia’s far east coast.
The waves reportedly breached the American mainland west coast at California’s San Francisco at 1:12 am on Wednesday, as per the National Weather Service for the San Francisco Bay Area.
The tsunami is also said to be impacting the state’s coastal Arena Cove area and making its way further down to the coast, the National Weather Service shared.
Further towards the south-west in the Pacific, waves started impacting the US Hawaiian islands shortly after 8 pm local time on Tuesday. However, in the latest update, the center said that it didn’t expect any major tsunamis to strike the state anytime soon.
So far, there have been no reports of any damage in Hawaii. Governor Josh Green shared how they would need to wait for authorities for several hours before being able to assess the situation and see if it’s safe.
The state’s emergency management agency also mentioned how all commercial harbors were closed for the time being. At the same time, flights in and out of the state of Hawaii were also cancelled on Tuesday night as a precaution and safety measure.
