The Trump administration has filed an emergency petition with the Supreme Court of the US seeking help to roll out the National Guard in Chicago.
The goal is to protect federal personnel and property during a time that is called out to be very violent and linked to resistance to following law and order by immigration enforcement operations.
The request arrives at a time after the federal judge ruled that although the Guard might remain in Illinois, it could not have the right to patrol or defend federal locations.
The administration’s filing submitted by the Solicitor General D. John Sauer argued how the lower court’s decision undermines presidential authority, jeopardizes federal agents’ safety, and hampers law enforcement missions.
Officials in Illinois spoke about how they are opposing the deployment and calling it a form of militarization of the city which they keep is a violation of the state’s sovereignty.
A federal appeals court upheld part of the lower court ruling and rejected the administration’s argument that the unrest amounts to that equivalent of a true rebellion. The plea to the nation’s top court comes as 11 protesters were arrested in the region for causing serious disruption of law and order.
