47 year old swimmer Ana Caldas who competed in the women’s category in masters swimming has recently been given a five year long ban by the governing body World Aquatics and has had all of her competitive results from 2022 to 2024 stripped.
The ban arises from her refusing to take part in any kind of gender verification or chromosomal tests. She further argued that she cannot afford it, and her insurance does not cover it as they don’t deem it to be important on medical grounds.
The star swimmer also mentioned how she wished to protect her medical privacy. The controversy had amplified due to Caldas competing in the women’s dominated age group events at the US Masters Swimming Spring Nationals and the Masters Worlds which prompted scrutiny of trans inclusion policies in sport.
Activist groups mentioned how the case raises serious issues of fairness in the sport, and that includes the eligibility criteria for trans athletes.
Caldas does accept the sanction, adding that she was well aware of the consequences of her actions. But the matter has really left some wondering if insurance was really the reason or public denial of her true gender in front of the world.
