Cynthia Erivo’s controverisal casting as Jesus Christ in the movie Jesus Christ Superstar has really raised eyebrows with the masses.
It’s safe to say that the performance has gotten serious backlash across the board, especially after a glimpse of her footage at the Hollywood Bowl went viral this past weekend.
Erivo, who showed up to perform on stage in a torn white colored number with claw-like acrylic nails, was witnessed singing opposite Adam Lambert in what the site called out as Return to the Rock Roots of the iconic musical.
But so many people, the production did not feel like it was a true revival. Others likened it to a more tiring and elitist provocation from the Hollywood industry.
‘This is supposed to be Jesus Christ Superstar, not Bride of Frankenstein’- the original poster mentioned with a clip racking up close to 2 million views over the past weekend.
Some called it eerie, others frightening and unholy. And then there were some who felt the look was just disastrous altogether. From the ripped dress to the long nails, it was just beyond shocking for viewers to see this unfold on stage. The overly exaggerated dialogue and sound effects had some referring to this as a demonic play.
