The aircraft, which was traveling from Salt Lake City to Washington, had to make an emergency landing in Denver after the cockpit’s windshield shattered 30,000 feet in the air some 90 minutes after the takeoff.

Recalling the announcement that made everyone “feel a little panicky,” passenger Rachel Wright said the staff kept on telling everyone to stay calm.

“They kept coming on saying for everyone to stay calm, to be calm, and we were calm so being told to stay calm while we were calm made us feel a little panicky,” she told KUTV.

While the two-inch-thick windshield reportedly cracked all over, it did not fall off its frame.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the flight crew diverted into Denver and the plane landed routinely. Our team worked quickly to accommodate customers on a new plane, and we sincerely apologize for the delay and inconvenience to their travel plans,” Delta said in a statement following the incident.

Meanwhile, the President and CEO of the Flight Safety Foundation spoke to DailyMail.com to confirm that windshield cracks may occur for a variety of reasons even though such instances are not common.

“Cockpit windshield cracks rarely occur,” Dr. Hassan Shahidi told DailyMail.com.

“The Delta pilots made a wise choice to divert out of abundance of caution. Windshields are designed and manufactured to withstand high pressure. They have two layers, and in the event of a failure, such as a crack, the airplane can safely maneuver to land.”
