A 29-year-old suspect has been arrested and accused of maliciously beginning a deadly Palisades Fire that took the lives of a dozen people earlier this year.
The complaint against Jonathan Rinderknecht alleged that he began a fire on New Year’s Day, which turned into one of the most destructive blazes in Los Angeles history.
He is now being charged with destruction of property by means of fire, or arson. The fire began in the Pacific Palisades region and ended up destroying more than 6800 buildings and killing 12 people. It was not fully contained until January 31.
Sharing the news on the X app, the acting US Attorney for the Central District of California mentioned that among the evidence collected from Rinderknecht’s digital services was a picture he produced on ChatGPT showing a city on fire.
Sources shared that the suspect had been working as an Uber driver that same day.
Rinderknecht later used his phone to make a call to 911 a few times, but couldn’t get through as per prosecutors. When he finally did, he was at the bottom of the hiking trail, but the fire had already been reported.
