Holidaymakers were recently forced to flee their Mediterranean escapes after a wildfire ravaged a Greek Island.
Three separate blazes arose below the Pangia Voitheia Monastery on Chios Island this morning and at midday. This has gone on to spread due to powerful winds.
The flames engulfed the whole island, and that left firefighters struggling to contain the fire.
Both tourists and locals were urged to evacuate from more than a dozen areas, while residents in Karyes were advised to flee towards the main town of Chios to remain safe.
A major investigation is now being launched to determine the cause of the fire, as some fear that it was a deliberate act in the form of an arson attack.
A special task force is now moving fast towards the island, which will be working with the country’s police state security to try and determine the cause of this blaze.
Dozens of firefighters from Athens and the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki were sent by ship as reinforcements to the 100 already on that same island.
Ten water-dropping helicopters and two firefighting planes provided air support until nightfall.
