At least five people were killed, including a pregnant woman who died after a ferry carrying hundreds of passengers burst into flames in Indonesia, forcing terrified travelers with no choice but to jump overboard.
More than 280 people were rescued, and evacuation efforts were in place following this incident on Sunday.
The KM Barcelona 5 was reportedly headed to Manado, which is the capital of North Sulawesi province, from Taluad, which is an island district in the province, when it caught fire inside the waters near Talise, Vice Admiral Denih Hendrata, commander of the Indonesian Fleet Command, shared.
A total of three navy ships were deployed to assist with the evacuation efforts. So far, 284 people, including passengers and crew members, have been evacuated.
It’s tragic that one of the deaths included a pregnant female. Currently, one person has been identified, and she was a pregnant female who died. Her body is now on land’- local media outlets did confirm.
The rescue operation included assistance from local fishermen who saved some of the survivors wearing life jackets as they were drifting to nearby islands inside the choppy waters. So far, no immediate reports of any injuries and no exact figures of passengers and crew members onboard the ferry were available.
