Three spectators reportedly passed away, and more than 70 others were injured after falling from the upper stands of a stadium.
The tragic incident arose during celebrations after MC Alger’s league title victory, as shared by Algeria’s Ministry of Health on Sunday.
The tragedy ensued shortly after MC Alger secured their second consecutive top-flight title.
As per local media, part of the barrier in the upper stand gave way, causing dozens of fans to fall into the lower tier.
In the statement shared on Facebook, the Ministry of Health mentioned how the Beni Messous University Hospital received 38 injured individuals, while three deaths were recorded. Ben Aknoun Hospital also had 27 injured people, while Bab el Oued Hospital had 16.
The country’s president offered condolences to the families of the victims involved and wished a fast recovery to all those injured in this tragedy.
MC Alger shared on their Instagram post the news and expressed condolences on the death of those who passed away after falling down from the upper stands.
The club is yet to comment on the other reported deaths.
Footage shared on social media showed how a section of the railing collapsed onto the lower tier of the stadium.
Emergency services replied quickly, transporting the injured to hospitals located nearby. MC Alger players and staff members also paid visits to the hospitals to donate blood.
The trophy presentation ceremony was postponed in light of this tragedy. The authorities have yet to state the stadium safety protocols that were in place that day.
