A man suffered a fatal fall recently at an ancient Roman site popular amongst so many tourists.
The 69-year-old victim was identified as Morimasa Hibino, who hailed from Japan, and died after falling from the Pantheon in Rome and landing in a ditch on Friday. This was confirmed by local media outlets, which shared that the tragic discovery was made by a priest who found his body on the ground.
The victim was identified by the Japanese embassy, as per CNN, who stated that the priest called authorities and reported a man lying on the ground.
This was located approximately 23 feet below street level, and subsequently contacted authorities in the area, the outlet shared.
The police stated that they needed to break down the gate to gain access to the ditch and retrieve the victim’s remains. At the moment, the police are investigating the cause of death, as per outlets. A spokesperson for the police in Rome shared that there is nothing that can be shared with the press as the ongoing investigation is yet to conclude.
The man’s daughter said he fell after suffering a sudden illness that made him feel dizzy.
