Immigration officers were seen arresting a university graduate from the Columbia University for assisting a widespread campaign of protests on campus against Israel’s treatment of Palestinians.
Now, sources have confirmed that the Trump Administration is preparing to have that student expelled, despite the fact that he’s a green card holder.
According to reports from local media outlets, the Trump administration invoked an obscure legal statute over this past weekend in attempts to deport the recent graduate from Columbia University.
People with knowledge of the incident shared how the matter arose last year, but the case has now been opened for discussion and the Trump administration is very serious on this front.
The student was identified as 30-year-old Mahmoud Khalil who graduated in December from Columbia with a master’s degree from the School of International and Public Affairs.
The incident arose in New York on Saturday and the arrested student was then sent to a detention center in Louisiana. The student has a Palestinian heritage and is now a permanent citizen of the country. The incident marks the first such action carried out by Donald Trump and his administration and it’s causing a major debate.
