The Boeing 747-8 that was offered to US President Trump by Qatar was once served to the Qatari Royal Family and is now sitting unsold for years.
The lavishly configured version of this Boeing’s largest passenger aircraft was said to be lingering without any buyer for a while now without being put on sale in 2020. This was confirmed by aircraft listings and aviation analysts.
Trump publicly expressed serious frustration with Boeing’s years-long delay in delivering two modified 747s for presidential use.
The president argued that by accepting the offer from Qatar, he has the ability to bypass and save US taxpayers money. Critics, however, fear that this acceptance would not be ethical or even unconstitutional.
To meet Air Force One standards, the plane would need extensive modifications as well as secure communications, missile defense systems, and nuclear blast shielding.
This plane was first commissioned for Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani. He is Qatar’s former prime minister, and they delivered in the year 2012 at a listing price of $367 million. This does not include the interior, which costs tens of millions of dollars. Despite the luxury interior, the plane failed to find a buyer since it was put in the market in 2020.
