Tragic reports are speaking about a ferry sinking off the coast of Bali.
According to local media outlets, the boat was carrying more than 65 people and is believed to have sunk in rough seas near Indonesia’s resort island of Bali.
The vessel was traveling from Ketapang Port in East Java to Gilimanuk Port and is believed to have experienced a severe leak inside the engine room.
This led to a mass power outage and ultimately resulted in the boat overturning. As per rescuers, the search continues for more than 43 people, as four people were declared dead in the tragedy.
Poor weather conditions, including rough seas, are making it harder for search teams to carry out rescue operations.
Most of those rescued were found unconscious after spending hours adrift in turbulent waters. Despite rapid response efforts, the ferry was found upturned and drifting a southward direction. It’s believed that at the time of the incident, the ferry was transporting 53 people, including 12 crew members, and 22 cars with 14 lorries.
At the moment, nine vessels are taking part in the rescue operations, which include tug boats and inflatable boats, to try and find any survivors.
Ferry disasters are sadly not uncommon in this part of the world, especially when weather conditions make sailing more difficult.
