No survivors have been declared by Indian authorities after a Boeing Dreamliner passenger plane carrying 242 passengers crashed in the city of Ahmedabad today.
The local police chief has confirmed that 204 bodies were recovered from the plane crash site. There are no hopes of survivors, he reiterated.
The Air India flight was reportedly bound for London Gatwick, and it crashed just a few moments after it took off from the airport with 242 people on board.
The flight plummeted to the ground in the densely populated Meghani area, where it hit a medical hostel minutes after departing from Sardar Patel International Airport.
The country’s prime minister has called the tragedy one of the country’s worst aviation disasters in history and also referred to it as heartbreaking beyond words.
Investigations are taking place to determine the cause of the crash as rescue officials try to scavenge for body parts of those on board the doomed flight.
The flight was said to be carrying mostly Indians, but 53 British nationals were also aboard that flight, as per officials.
Police expect the death toll to rise as the plane struck a densely populated location. The video shows the plane struggling to achieve liftoff before crashing into the ground.
