Two people were killed and hundreds evacuated as a massive wildfire tore through southern Cyprus, destroying homes and threatening communities amid an intense heatwave.
At least 100 square kilometers were razed to the ground in the wine-producing region north of the city of Limassol, near the famous tourist hotspots, after the blaze broke out during midday.
Two people passed away after they were burned alive inside their car. As per local reports from the police, they are now working to identify their identities of those trying to escape their vehicle.
At least 10 people were reportedly injured, and two of them were said to be in a serious state, as shared by the police. It comes during a time when nearly 10 rescue workers lost their lives after they were unable to contain the punishing blaze that swept through the central Eskisehir province of Turkey yesterday.
Despite the aggressive efforts on the air and the ground, including 10 helicopters, five firefighting planes, and 30 fire trucks, dry conditions and unpredictable winds left two dozen emergency workers suddenly facing a massive inferno.
All 24 people had been evacuated, but 10 individuals lost their lives and suffered from serious burns and extreme smoke inhalation. 14 more remained inside the hospital and are currently undergoing treatment overnight, the officials shared.
