An Alabama woman’s remains were eaten by her dogs after she died, according to authorities.
Rita Thomas’s remains were found at her residence in the small town of Remlap after the Blount County Sheriff’s Office rolled out a welfare check around 4 pm local time, as per reports from WBRC.
The woman, who happened to be in her late 60s, is said to have passed away from natural causes as per ABC 33/40. Investigators suspect Thomas might have experienced a medical episode on the exterior stairs of her residence, as her body was found outside.
As per ABC 33/40, deputies found human remains across the property, and Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey mentioned to the outlet that the incident was not a dog attack.
Thomas had two dogs and one cat, as shared by ABC. The dogs, which were said to be restricted to the property through wireless perimeter collars these ended up getting euthanized in the end due to the severe biohazard of consuming human remains, as per the outlet.
Thomas’ cat that was inside the home was euthanized after it was found lethargic and malnourished, as per ABC. The outlet added how the woman’s remains were also said to have been eaten by other wild animals while it was inside the yard.
