A transgender father and daughter from Detroit have shared their incredible journey of transition from mother and son.
Corey Maison was only 15 when she first informed her parents about being identified as a female four years back. But it was not until last year that she learned about her mother struggling with her gender identity.
The duo is now leaning on one another as they transition together.
The teenager has chronicled their transitions through their Instagram account, and the duo sat down for an interview with Australia’s 60 Minutes to talk about the whole experience.
‘I wanted to make my parents proud of who I am, but I thought that they would not like me!’- she shared after her thoughts about coming out as a transgender.
‘I wished to make my parents understand that this is what I needed in my life and that this was my real identity. There is no other way to put these into words!’- she mentioned.
Eric Maison, who used to be known as Erica, explained that he was emboldened by his daughter’s decision. He found himself with all types of emotions while deciding on whether or not he should undergo this process of transition.
‘The first feeling he had was related to relief and the second one had to do with terror!’- he added. There was a lot at stake, including his whole life’s future, fear of his family and kids accepting him, and fear of what the rest of the world would be like.
Since then, Eric underwent a double mastectomy and plans to stay with his husband, Les, who really does support the decision that he ended up taking.
‘I fell in love with the person. She was a beautiful person and had the most wonderful heart. As long as Eric is happy with his appearance, I am happy’- his husband revealed.
The recently transitioned dad of five mentioned how he does regret not facing the reality of his struggles in the past. ‘I wish I had done this sooner but that’s because I was not educated about transgenderism’- he continued.
