Jamie Lee Curtis and Michelle Yeoh’s Oscar win marks a big moment for all middle-aged women out there.
On Sunday night, Yeoh, 60, took to the stage at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to scoop up the Best Actress Oscar for her role as Evelyn Wang in the hit movie Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Meanwhile, Jamie Lee, 64, graced the 95th Academy Awards with a beautiful speech as she picked up her first-ever Oscar for her supporting role as IRS auditor Deirdre Beaubeirdre in the same movie.
Since the Best Actor award went to Brendan Fraser and Best Supporting Actor to Ke Huy Quan, it means all four recipients in the Best Actor/Actress and Best Supporting Actor/Actress categories were over 50.
Moreover, Yeoh made history as she became the first-ever actress of Asian descent to win the Best Actress Oscar.
“Tonight, we frickin’ broke that glass ceiling. We need this because there are so many that have felt unseen, unheard. Not just the Asian community,” the Star Trek: Discovery star said.
“This is for the Asian community, but for anybody who’s been identified as a minority. We deserve to be seen. We deserve to have equal opportunity so we can have a seat at the table. That’s all we’re asking for. Give us that opportunity, let us prove that we’re worth it.”
Sharing words of encouragement with other women who have big dreams, Yeoh added: “Dream big, and dreams do come true – and ladies, don’t let anyone tell you that you are past your prime.”
Yeoh’s Oscar, similar as in Jamie Lee’s case, comes after decades of hard work and signifies the resurgence of kings and queens who dedicated most of their lives to the entertainment industry.
Speaking out at the Oscars, Curtis dedicated her speech to the entire crew of Everything Everywhere All at Once while paying a tribute to her late parents.
“I know it looks like I am standing up here by myself, but I am not. I am hundreds of people. My bae Michelle (Yeoh), Ke (Huy Quan), Stephanie (Hsu) – the entire group of artists who made this movie – we just won an Oscar,” she said.
“To my dream team: my agent Rick Kurtzman, Alan Wertheimer, Heidi Schaeffer, Sean James, Grace Ahn, Jane Ross. We just won an Oscar!”
Jamie Lee continued: “To my family, my beautiful husband, Christopher Guest; our daughters, Annie and Ruby; my sister Kelly. We just won an Oscar!
“To all of the people who have supported the genre movies that I have made for all these years, the thousands and hundreds of thousands of people, we just won an Oscar together. My mother and my father were both nominated for Oscars in different categories. I just won an Oscar.”
