The five victims killed in the deadly tour bus crash in western New York included a Columbia University student from China, three residents from New Jersey, and a resident from India, according to authorities on Saturday.
The crash occurred near Exit 48A on the eastbound I-90 at about 12:40 pm as the driver with Staten Island-based M&Y Tour Inc. was taking 52 passengers and a tour guide from Niagara Falls to New York City.
The driver apparently got so distracted that it caused the vehicle to swerve and roll over a huge ditch. As per officials, it first veered left into the median and then moved to the right, back across the travel lines, rolling off the right-hand shoulder of the highway.
The NTSB shared how it’s carrying out its own safety measures and investigations that are parallel to the law enforcement case taking place by the New York State Police. The crash occurred near Pembroke in Genesee County on the stretch of the highway where the speed limit is 65 miles per hour.
NTSB investigators are trying to get into more details about the performance and possible mechanical issues, highway engineering, and other factors.
The bus happened to be equipped with a data recorder that would assist in determining the speed as per the official.
