The petition to grant clemency to the 26-year-old trucker who was sentenced to 110 years in jail for taking the lives of four people has received more than 4 million signatures.
The petition urging Governor Jared Police to reduce the sentence has reached over 4.4 million signatures and people online are calling on truck drivers to boycott Colorado.
Speaking to CBS 4, protest organizers said: “Our goal is to bring local and national awareness so that we CAN find someone who will support Rogel in creating change in this sentencing.”
“Let’s join together and RISE UP in support for Rogel! Let Governor Polis Know the TIME doesn’t fit the ‘Crime.’ If we do not stand up for him, who will?” the organizers added.
Grieving relatives of the victims said that Aguilera-Mederos is not a victim.
Gage Evans, the wife of William Bailey who tragically died in the collision, told the New York Times: “This person should spend some time in prison and think about his actions. I don’t think he should be left off with a slap on the wrist.”
“We truly are the victims,” the 65-year-old widow added, noting that she believes the Colorado trucker made “bad decisions all along the way that day.”
A Police spokesperson said that the governor’s office will “welcome an application” for clemency from the defense and “and will expedite consideration but have not received one yet at this time.”
It was on April 25, 2019, when Aguilera-Mederos was driving a semi down Interstate in Lakewood, Colorado. He crashed into more than 10 vehicles, including four other semi-trucks.
The crash caused an explosion that incinerated trucks and cars and claimed the lives of four people.
