After assuming the responsibilities of a new monarch and steadying himself since the death of the Queen, King Charles started to falter as he gazed at the angel carvings of Westminster Hall where her mother will rest until the state funeral.
Grief was written on the faces of the Queen’s loved ones as the royals handed her over to the nation.
The Princess of Wales and Countess of Wessex were seen offering words of resolve before bells tolled and drums rolled.
Some of Her Majesty’s closest family members appeared at the North Door, including Zara Tindall, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
The Queen Consort, the Princess of Wales, the Countess of Wessex, and the Duchess of Sussex later appeared together and stood close to the door where the Queen’s casket would be arriving.
Draped in the Royal Standard and topped with flowers and the Imperial State Crown, the coffin was carried inside just after 3 pm.
As the Queen’s coffin passed by ladies-in-waiting, the silence was broken by gasps as Lady Gabriella Windsor’s legs buckled with emotions.
Grief was etched on the faces of Eugenie and Beatrice as their husbands offered them comfort before other royals led by King Charles walked in.
The new monarch was alongside the Queen Consort, who had joined him at the doors.
As the sounds of the Royal Chapel Choir echoed, Charles seemed to be swayed with emotion.
The passage read by the Archbishop of Canterbury from John 14:1-6, in which Jesus told his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me,” seemed to settle the King as he bowed his head in a moment of silent reflection.
Outside the building, thousands of people steadied themselves to see Her Majesty on a gun carriage leaving Buckingham Palace for the last time.
