The actor’s followers have since also speculated that something is brewing up between Depp and his attorney after seeing the pair exchanging hugs, smiles, and gentle touches in the courtroom.

It has now come to light, however, that Vasquez almost didn’t make the cut when Depp and his team were looking for a new member.

As DailyMail.com revealed, the Pirates of the Caribbean star initially wanted to pick Kathleen Zellner, a renowned attorney who helped overturn dozens of wrongful convictions over the last few decades.

According to a source that spoke to the publication, Depp was initially fascinated by Zellner after seeing her in the Netflix show Making a Murderer.

“Johnny became aware of Kathleen Zellner while watching Making a Murderer and was really impressed by her,” a source told DailyMail.com.

“The plan was always to have a female attorney cross-examine Amber and that was why Zellner was brought into the case, she had the star power and the big reputation.”

Despite Depp’s wishes, however, his legal team vetoed the suggestion to bring Zellner into the blockbuster case.

According to the report, Ben Chew, the head of Depp’s legal team, instead suggested a relatively fresh face with more knowledge of the case could be a better choice. Vasquez, who works as an associate at Chew’s Brown Rudnick law firm, was then brought in.

“But in reality, the decision to bring her in was taken way too late and there was no way she could have gotten up to speed in such a short space of time,” the source added.

“Vasquez is not exactly a rookie, but it’s unusual to have an associate taking charge in such a huge case. But she knew the evidence inside out and has done a great job.”
