A building under renovation collapsed in central Madrid on Tuesday, killing two construction workers and leaving two more missing, the mayor of Spain’s capital mentioned in a statement shared with the press.
However, shortly after that, tragic news arose that all four were confirmed dead in the tragedy. Mayor Jose Luis Martinez Almeida mentioned how emergency workers and police ended up recovering the remains of a male and had located the body of another person trapped in the debris.
The mayor added that one of the missing workers was a female, but that it was too soon to know the gender of the remains of those located in the ruins.
Another three workers were seriously injured, and one of them was said to be suffering from a fractured leg when the top floor of the six-story high building collapsed and pancaked the subsequent floors under it at about 1 pm, as per the mayor.
The facade remained standing and apparently stopped most of the debris from reaching the street. Firefighters and the cops were using sniffer dogs and drones to assist with the search efforts.
‘We will keep working until we find all those who are missing,’ the police shared. The building’s facade was covered by a huge green tarp, and usually used by construction crews when renovating older buildings.
