An Austrian brain surgeon is making headlines after being accused of letting a 12-year-old girl drill into the patient’s head during an emergency surgery, as per local media outlets.
The girl happened to be the surgeon’s daughter, who was given guidance and told to drill into the head while the parent doctor watched, leaving the medical staff stunned beyond words.
The incident entailed a farm worker who had flown to the country’s University Hospital in Graz to get emergency treatment after a tree branch fell on his head.
The trial against the female surgeon is currently taking place, and while she has yet to be named, the incident has people going bananas. As per the report, the surgeon’s daughter was believed to be very interested in the field of medicine and pleaded with her mother to let her witness the operation.
The youngster was even given a hands-on experience of touching sterilized surgical instruments and even handed a pair of surgical scrubs, and she joined the team as if she were authorized to do so.
The report goes as far as to allege that the mother allowed her to drill a hole into the exposed skullcap alone, and people were beyond stunned as the girl did it all on her own, giving rise to serious and gross negligence on the part of the doctor in handling the case.
After the hole was drilled, a surgical instrument was inserted during the minor procedure to take some measurements. An investigation is taking place as the trial has left many speechless at the standard of healthcare practiced at the facility.
