It’s been hours since the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize this year, and Norway is bracing for the reaction of Donald Trump after he lost the bid to win the prestigious accolade.
Politicians in the country are now steeling themselves for potential repercussions to US-Norway relations after it did not go in Trump’s direction, with some fearing for the worst.
Experts shared how it was never likely that he would get the award by any means, despite the fact that he helped broker the peace deal with Hamas and Israel.
The reason is the timeframe in which that arose. It was just too late, and while he might be a possible nomination for next year, the reality might be bitter for him to swallow. Norway fears how he would react to being overlooked so publicly.
Kirsti Bergsto and the foreign policy spokesperson mentioned how Oslo needs to be prepared for anything and everything that comes in their direction.
‘Trump is taking the US in an extreme direction, so when a man like that is so volatile and authoritarian, then we need to be prepared for anything’- she continued. This includes possible tariffs and a greater contribution to NATO than it is right now.
