Former American President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive and advanced form of prostate cancer.
According to reports from local media outlets, the cancer has metastasized to the bone, his office confirmed on Sunday.
This incident has reignited concerns over his health that shadowed his final years in public life.
The diagnosis arose on Friday after Biden underwent a medical evaluation for urinary symptoms.
Doctors reportedly found a prostate nodule, and further testing went on to confirm metastatic prostate cancer as being one of the most difficult types of cancers to treat.
His Gleason score, which is a measure of cancer aggressiveness, was reported to be 9 out of 10, which signaled a severe stage of this disease.
Despite such a grim diagnosis, Biden’s office shared a critical silver lining, including how the cancer seems to be hormone sensitive, which happens to be a trait that enables various treatment options to be employed, like hormone deprivation therapy.
Currently, he and his loved ones are exploring various options with doctors for therapy. As shared by medical experts, when the disease spreads, it usually travels to the bones. This underscores the challenges of treating metastasized cancer, which is elusive to drugs and more difficult to remove. However, hormone-sensitive tumors provide a therapeutic window.
