Hollywood actor Ben Stiller has met with President Volodymyr Zelensky as he paid a visit to Ukraine amid the Russian invasion.
On Saturday, the 56-year-old ‘Meet The Parents’ star talked to volunteers and aid workers after arriving in Poland near the border with Ukraine.
On the following day, the UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador visited Ukraine and walked among damaged infrastructure and buildings to mark World Refugee Day.
“Hey, I’m Ben Stiller, and I’m here in Ukraine. I’m meeting people who’ve been impacted by the war and hearing how it’s changed their lives,” the actor said in his video clip.
“War and violence are devastating people all over the world. Nobody chooses to flee their home. Seeking safety is a right, and it needs to be upheld for every person.”
After seeing the devastation waged by war firsthand, Stiller paid a visit to Ukraine’s strongman President Volodymyr Zelensky who has gained fame worldwide after his relentless determination to stand up to Russia’s aggression.
“Sir, really nice to meet you. Thanks for taking the time. You’re my hero,” the actor said as he approached Zelensky and shook hands with the president.
Stiller also drew a smile on Zelensky’s face as he praised the former comedian for his acting career and for what he has done for his country and the entire world in recent months.
After sitting down at the table, Zelensky said it’s important that people talk about what’s going on in Ukraine and not forget the war even though discussing such things is not “interesting.”
“For us it’s very important. When people forget to speak about it, they influence how to push the Russians [out of the country],” Zelensky suggested.
Responding, Stiller admitted that it is hard to understand what’s happening in Ukraine unless you’ve been there and seen the aftereffects of the war in person.
“The level of destruction, I mean you see it on television, exactly what you’re saying… you see it on TV, you see it on social media and, you know, it’s something else to actually see it in the theater,” he said.
