A formal ethics complaint was recently filed urging the Ethics Committee at FIFA to investigate its head, Gianni Infantino, over his bizarre decision to award President Donald Trump the inaugural FIFA peace prize at the 2026 World Cup that was held in Washington, DC.
This particular complaint has raised eyebrows across the board, as many felt the FIFA Code of Ethics was violated by this behavior.
The fact that Trump was praised to this extent and people were seen supporting him politically at a sports event had people mentioning how FIFA’s requirement that officials stay politically neutral was missed under this particular code.
As per the recently filed complaint, Infantino rolled out a series of shocking statements on this front that backed Trump, including advocating for him to get this Nobel Peace Prize and expressing support for the political agenda on social media.
Before this was presented, advocates argued that awarding a sitting political leader crossed a major line that this process for rolling out the award should have involved FIFA’s bigger governance structures, not just the president.
FIFA’s ethics committee has yet to publicly share or confirm if it has accepted this complaint or will be carrying out any kind of formal investigation on this front. Under the company’s ethics rules, such breaches could give rise to serious sanctions as well as bans that are temporary from different football activities, but it’s yet to be clear how this whole scenario could unfold in the end.
