A group of Senate Democrats has introduced legislation aimed at stopping the US government from minting commemorative coins that feature the President.
This proposed bill, known as the Change Corruption Act, was rolled out by Senators Jeff Merkley and Catherine Masto, with further co-sponsors including Richard Blumenthal and Ron Wyden.
This draft legislation stated that no American currency might bear the picture of a living or sitting president. This was directly targeting an announced plan by the US Mint to roll out a special $1 coin in the year 2026. This is the 250th anniversary of American independence.
This entails pictures of Trump. Such designs were listed on the Mint’s site and were said to be a part of the commemorative series, with nearly two versions portraying Trump’s head.
Senator Merkley criticized Trump’s push to put himself on Money, calling this a moment of self-celebratory and authoritarian. He likened this move to actions shown by dictators instead of the usual US norms.
However, even if this bill passes through the Senate, its prospects, as per experts, are very slim. So many Republicans are holding majorities in both chambers of Congress, and Trump’s influence regarding his party makes a successful passage so unlikely.
