The hacking collective known as Anonymous has officially declared war against the Russian government after Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
While world leaders are busy condemning Vladimir Putin and deliberating imposing sanctions on the Russian government, the Anonymous collective has openly declared cyberwar against the invaders.
“The Anonymous collective is officially in cyberwar against the Russian government,” the group announced on their Twitter account after Russian troops invaded Ukraine and besieged the capital of Kyiv.
Just half an hour after the announcement, the group made their first move by temporarily taking down the website of a Kremlin-backed TV channel that broadcasts worldwide.
The RT TV network, which has often been branded by critics as a tool of the Kremlin to spread pro-Russian propaganda, suffered a major blow when its British site was rendered inaccessible for nearly a day.
The declaration of cyberwar against Putin’s regime comes shortly after Ukrainian banks and government organizations were targeted presumably by Russian hackers as part of the country’s “special military operation.”
“The Putin criminal regime are gonna have a very hard time recovering from our attacks! We are not with the people, WE ARE THE PEOPLE! We stand with Ukraine. Anonymous stands with UKRAINE!!” the group wrote in one of their recent posts.
True to their word, Anonymous took their cyberwar a step further by targeting a series of Russian government sites, including those of the Ministry of Defense and Duma, by either crippling them or completely immobilizing them.
