The Anonymous hackers collective has targeted and hacked into several top Russian government sites and leaked confidential information.
Taking to Twitter to announce their achievement, the hacktivists – who declared cyberwar against Russia following Putin’s invasion of Ukraine – claimed they brought down four major Russian sites including that of the country’s intelligence service.
Among the hacked sites were Russia’s Federal Security Service, Ministry of Sport of the Russian Federation, Moscow.ru, and the Analytical Center for the Government of the Russian Federation.
Anonymous also leaked an alleged confidential correspondence between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.
In the disturbing letter, the two leaders outlined their plans to cut down the forests in occupied Ukraine and sell the wood to boost Russia’s defenses.
“Dear Vladimir… In order to create fortifications to provide formations, military units of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation involved in a special military operation, felling is required on defense lands and other categories, followed by the use of the resulting wood by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation,” the letter reads.point 419 | 1
The confidential paper adds that the income generated from the sales of Ukrainian wood will be used for Russia’s “interests of defense.”
The big reveal comes shortly after Anonymous reportedly hacked Roskomnadzor, Russia’s media censorship agency, and leaked over 300,000 confidential files and e-mail exchanges that were passed on to and published by a non-profit whistleblower side known as Distributed Denial of Secrets.
According to the reports, a total of 820 gigabytes worth of documents, attachments, and e-mails was leaked to the public.
