Netflix, American Express, TikTok, and Pricewaterhouse Coopers are the latest of several big companies to boycott Russia amid its invasion of Ukraine.
A spokesperson for Netflix said that the company temporarily stopped all future projects and acquisitions in the country as it assessed the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“Given the circumstances on the ground, we have decided to suspend our service in Russia,” the spokesperson said.
American Express also announced that it is suspending operations in Russia and Belarus.
In a statement, the company said that globally issued American Express cards will no longer work at ATMs or merchants in Russia. Cards issued locally in Russia will also stop working outside the country.
American Express previously stopped its connections with banks in Russia impacted by the US and international government sanctions.
Mastercard and Visa have also blocked several Russian financial institutions, complying with government sanctions imposed over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
According to Sky News, PrimewerhouseCoopers is also set to cut its Russian firm from its global network, in what the outlet describes “the most significant exit so far by a multinational company since the Putin government’s decision to invade Ukraine.”
The decision will affect 3,700 partners and staff at PwC, which is one of the big four accountancy companies in the world.
TikTok has also suspended content and live streaming in Russia in response to its controversial ‘fake news’ law.
“TikTok is an outlet for creativity and entertainment that can provide a source of relief and human connection during a time of war when people are facing immense tragedy and isolation,” the company said, adding that they had “no choice” but to suspend its services.
Some of the companies cutting ties with Russia are Warner Adidas, DHL, FedEx, Disney, Vovo, Shell, Nokia, HSBC, GM, BP, Dell, UPS, and Ericsson.
