Amber Heard plans to appeal the verdict in the defamation case against Johnny Depp after she was left owing her ex-husband $10,350,000.
After deliberation, the jury ruled in the Pirates of the Caribbean actor’s favor. He was awarded $15 million – $5 million in punitive damages and $10 million in compensation. But the judge capped the damages at the Virginia maximum of $350,000.
Heard was awarded only $2 million in compensatory damages out of the $100 million she was seeking.
A spokesperson for Heard told The New York Times that the Aquaman actress plans to appeal, the Daily Mail reported.
It is unclear on what grounds Heard plans to appeal but she would likely have to show that there were errors during the trial or in the judge’s reading of the law.
The 36-year-old would also need to post $10,350,000 bond plus interest charges.
As Heard left court, she looked down while jumping into a truck with her sister Whitney. Meanwhile, Depp spent the day celebrating at a UK pub with rock stars Sam Fender and Jeff Beck.
Heard released a statement after the verdict and said: “The disappointment I feel today is beyond words.
“I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband.
“I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women. It is a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated.”
Depp also released a statement and said: “Six years ago, my life, the life of my children, the lives of those closest to me, and also, the lives of the people who for many, many years have supported and believed in me were forever changed.
“And six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled.”
