Amber Heard hasn’t followed through on her promise to pay three-and-a-half million dollars to the American Civil Liberties Union.
Following her 2016 split from Hollywood star Johnny Depp, the Aquaman actress pledged to donate the dollars she had received as part of her divorce settlement to the charity.
On Thursday, however, the court heard that the actress has so far only paid $1.3 million to the ACLU – a third of what she had promised six years ago.
During the Thursday proceeding of Depp’s blockbuster defamation trial against his ex-wife, it has also come to light that a large chunk of the $1.3 million donation was likely paid in Heard’s name by Tesla billionaire Elon Musk.
Musk, who allegedly dated the actress for about a year after her split from Depp, made a $500,000 donation to the ACLU in Amber’s name using a Vanguard account, ACLU Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel Terence Dougherty suggested.
While it is not clear who is behind the account at the investment firm, Dougherty said it is “believed it was a fund set up by Elon Musk.”
During the court proceeding, it was also revealed that Heard only paid $350,000 directly, whereas Depp contributed $100,000. The remaining $350,000 came from a Fidelity fund.
Dougherty also opened up about Musk’s involvement in the pledge saying there were emails with the billionaire suggesting that the $3.5 million pledge would be paid over the period of ten years.
Previously, Heard’s lawyers argued that the actress intends to deliver on her pledge but needs to focus on paying her legal fees first.
The court also heard that the actress hasn’t made any donations since her $350,000 contribution in 2018.
“We reached out to Miss Heard starting in 2019 for the next installment of her giving and we learned she was having financial difficulties,” Dougherty responded after Depp’s attorney asked about the charity’s efforts “to get Amber Heard to pay.”
