Hollywood star Alec Baldwin has attempted to shift the blame for the deadly Rust set accident saying he was just following orders.
Baldwin has been facing numerous lawsuits after accidentally shooting dead director of photography Halyna Hutchins on the Rust movie set in Santa Fe.
Though the embattled actor pointed the gun and pulled the trigger while rehearsing a scene, his lawyers now argue that he should be exempt from any financial responsibilities related to Hutchins’ death thanks to the specifications in his contract.
Furthermore, his arbitration demand argues that the actor was free of misconduct and negligence because he was allegedly just following orders of the late cinematographer when he pointed a gun at her and pulled the trigger.
“This is a rare instance when the system broke down, and someone should be held legally culpable for the tragic consequences. That person is not Alec Baldwin,” the Friday filing on Baldwin’s behalf read.
“October 21 was also the worst day in Alec Baldwin’s life. That day has and will continue to haunt Baldwin.”
The paper added that “an actor cannot rule that a gun is safe” and that “that is the responsibility of other people on the set.”
“She directed Baldwin to hold the gun higher, to a point where it was directed toward her. She was looking carefully at the monitor and then at Baldwin, and then back again, as she gave these instructions,” the filing submitted to the JAMS arbitration system reads.
“In giving and following these instructions, Hutchins and Baldwin shared a core, vital belief: that the gun was ‘cold’ and contained no live rounds.”
These allegations appear to shift the blame for the tragic shooting on other people on the set who were responsible for gun safety. Besides Baldwin, armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed and assistant director David Halls were personally named in several wrongful death lawsuits since the tragedy.
Matthew Hutchins, the husband of the late cinematographer, has since slammed the actor for failing to take responsibility for his actions and making it look as if he was the victim.
“He said essentially he felt grief but no guilt. Almost sounds like he was the victim. The idea that the person holding the gun and causing it to discharge is not responsible is absurd to me,” Matthew previously told TODAY.
