Shocking reports are speaking about the harrowing details that emerged regarding a plane that was forced to fly without a pilot for ten minutes after the co-pilot had collapsed.
According to reports from local media outlets, this incident took place last year when the Lufthansa flight was flying from Germany to Spain last year.
The captain left the cockpit to visit the restroom just as the Airbus was about to cross the Spanish border, leaving the first officer in charge and in control as the flight approached the last half hour.
Just eight minutes later, he was not able to get back inside the room as the co-pilot lost consciousness. This flight was from Frankfurt to Seville. It appeared to be running smoothly and was cruising when the tragedy struck.
The captain tried to enter the security door’s access code five times while the flight attendant tried to contact the first officer through the intercom.
Finally, after getting no reply, the captain used the emergency access code. Before the timer expired, the first officer was able to recover enough to open the door.
The captain immediately called for assistance after seeing the pilot’s pale and sweating face and moving in a strange fashion.
The cabin crew and a doctor on board administered first aid while the plane was diverted to Madrid, which was the nearest airport at the time. Upon landing, the first officer was rushed to a nearby hospital.
