It all happened when a fierce storm hit a town outside Amsterdam, Netherlands, which left a group of 100 horses stranded on a small area of land.

When the officials learned about what happened to these poor horses, they tried everything to guide them out to safe ground.

Unfortunately, for three days, none of the methods worked. And, as the days went by, 19 out of 100 horses had died from either drowning or of exposure.

The officials knew that more horses were going to die in a few days since they were without any food or a decent place to sleep.
But, they were having trouble finding experienced riders who could lead the herd through the floodwaters while riding horseback.

At that point, it just seemed impossible.

Then, a miracle happened – a brave woman named Norma Miedema stepped up. She contacted the authorities and told them that she would do anything to save the horses. Amazingly, six more women volunteered to help Norma in guiding the animals to safety.

Since time was running out for the horses, the riders – Norma, Susan, Micky, Antje, Hinke, Christina, and Fardow – met the very next day to carry out the rescuing plan.

Unfortunately, Norma had to stay on-site because she got sick with pneumonia. Still, though, the rest of the team went in without hesitation.
Much to everyone’s relief, the entire herd followed the rescue team, except for one horse.

And, later that day, the team went back to get the last remaining horse on the island.
