Fans of the true-crime genre have something to look forward to now that Netflix has released the trailer for Lost Girls, its latest true-crime movie adaptation.

Lost Girls is a dramatization based on true events and tells the shocking tale of the Long Island serial killer who killed at least 10 people within a span of 14 years, between 1996 and 2010. People fear the killer could have murdered many more.

The movie is actually an adaptation of Robert Kolker’s bestselling novel Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery. Kolker worked closely with the families of the victims.

The movie revolves around the investigation of Shannan Gilbert’s death. She was a prostitute who went missing just before the bodies of four other women were found along Ocean Parkway in Suffolk County.

Shannan’s body was discovered in December 2011 about three miles from where the other women were found. But at the time, police didn’t believe there was a link.

In the movie, Shannan’s mother Mari Gilbert (portrayed by Amy Ryan) searches for the truth and details her fight for the police and the press to see her daughter and the other women as human beings rather than simply prostitutes.

The movie portrays the attitudes of police at the time when investigating those who work in the sex industry.

Mari says in the trailer: “No one is talking about our girls. And when they do it’s prostitute, hooker, never mother, daughter. And it’s our job to make sure these girls are not forgotten.”

Adding: “I’ve been dismissed and ignored, but one thing I won’t be is silenced.”

One of the officers could be heard in the background saying: “Honestly, who spends this much time looking for a missing hooker.”

The synopsis reads: “Mari Gilbert retraces Shannan’s last known steps, driving her own investigation to an insular gated community near the desolate outer banks of Long Island.

“Her discoveries force law enforcement and the media to uncover more than a dozen unsolved murders of sex workers, young lives Mari will not let the world forget.”

The movie comes just after another Netflix true-crime documentary: Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez.

This mini-series follows the murder of semi-professional American football player Odin Lloyd. It then documents the subsequent arrest, trial, and conviction of Aaron Hernandez, an NFL player.
