A neglected dog that had been suffering from mange and skin infections has been given a second chance at life after a woman took the pooch under her wing and helped it recover.

27-year-old Tennessee-based Lauren Buckley rescued an “alien-looking” dog, Lainey, and provided her with a foster home back on Christmas.

While the woman wasn’t sure if the dog was going to make it due to the extent of her health conditions, the foster mum was happy to announce that Lainey has become unrecognizable, in a good way, following months of treatment.

“On Christmas Eve, we brought home an alien-looking creature who we feared would succumb to her infections before we could get her to the vet,” Buckley wrote in her Facebook post.

“She stunk, she couldn’t see, and she bled all over our couch. But we would do it all again, because today we get to send off a beautiful, spunky, sweet, healthy dog who has nothing but wonderful things in store for her.”

As the 27-year-old told Bored Panda, Lainey was in a terrible condition when she was found and no one knew whether she was going to survive or not.

Reportedly, the pooch had been suffering from skin infections and demodectic mange whereas she most likely didn’t have much time left to escape the inevitable at the time of the rescue.

“We had her for four months. She took daily antibiotics and ivermectin for the full four months,” Buckley said according to Bored Panda.

“In addition, we gave her coconut oil in her food, applied it to her skin, and gave her twice-weekly medicated baths. We also did our best to keep her stress level low since demodex thrives on stress.”

Fortunately, the pooch has completely recovered from her health issues with skin conditions becoming a thing of the past.

Thanking Brown Dog Coalition for playing their part, Buckley explained how they paid for Lainey’s vet expenses and helped her save the dog on Christmas Eve.

“They save countless dogs who need major medical care and this wouldn’t have been possible without them,” she said.

Buckley also revealed that Lainey has found a forever home as her good friend and her husband decided to adopt the transformed pooch.

“She and her husband are incredible, kindhearted people who were smitten with Lainey from the get-go. We could not have asked for a better family for her,” Buckley expressed.
